A pair of freestanding deer cut from MDF in a plain natural finish, one 8 inches and one 12 - and the height gap is the whole reason this works. Two the same size look like stock; two at different heights look arranged.

Undyed and unfussy, so they suit a neutral mantel and can stay out through the deep-winter months when nobody wants to look at red and green any more.
